After 25 days without any drop of water from heaven, São Paulo government finally decided to declare the state is facing a critical situation. Although the governor didn´t say it´s time to ration water, the statement is the first step towards the rationing – which is inevitable for some ambientalists.
The capacity of Cantareira system, responsable for supplying more than 9 million, has decreasing more and more. Nowadays it reached -12,6% of the capacity (it´s negative because the system has already taken water from the called “dead volume”).
In August, São Paulo registered less than 1 milimeter of rain in the whole system – practically nothing compared to the historical average of 36,7 milimeters .
The catchment of water has already been reduced in 10 São Paulo´s cities in order to avoid the rivers drought. Many factories have closed and moved to other places and people are told to save water as much as they can.
In this sad context, what should be a solution turned to to another problem. The river from where São Paulo´s government intended to catch water is getting drier and drier. Therefore, it won´t be possible to remove some of its water and put it in Cantareira´s system.
As you can see, millions of Brazilians who were used to live with abudance of water, now have to be re-educated and learn to live with scarcity.
